Other Work

I meant to put together this page for a while, but having to send an email to a prospective employer with a series of links convinced me that it might be an idea to put said links to all my various scribbles in one place. So here it is…if you have any comments or insults or questions about any of the following then comment or drop me a line at scratonp [at] hotmail [dot] com.

NON FICTION

The closest thing I have to a day job is Editor-in-Chief of Packed Magazine, which is free, distributed around Europe, published in Austria (but in English) and is aimed at independent travellers. So far I have been at the helm for nine editions, with a tenth due out at the beginning of May. You can find it at hostels across Berlin and Europe, or you can download it here.

In May 2007 an article I wrote on Dubrovnik featured in the “Commended” longlist for the Independent on Sunday / Bradt Travel Guides Travel Writing Competition.

Other Articles…

Here are some other pieces that are available to read by the wonders of t’internet:

Letter from Berlin, which was in the Guardian Weekly (Jan 26th 2007), and is about the Arkonaplatz fleamarket.

Derby Day in East Berlin, on the wonderfully informative Abseits-Soccer guide to German football, about the game in 2005 between BFC Dynamo and 1.FC Union.

How to Holiday Like Hitler, which I promise was NOT my title…about the Nazis Prora complex on the island of Rügen, published on Travelmag.co.uk.

I also write regularly for Praxis Englisch, a magazine for language-students in Germany, on a variety of topics including Gordon Brown, Binge-Drinking in the UK, Liverpool as the European Capital of Culture, and who the English fans will support now that their team are not competing in Euro 2008. If you are an English teacher here in Germany, you should take a look, as there are some good articles to use as a basis for discussion in class, various activities, and other funky things to keep your students inspired.

Plus, during the World Cup I edited a thrice-weekly magazine called Totaalvoetbal for guests to the city. Unfortunately it is not online anywhere, so you can’t check it out…but it was great, honest…and if you would like to read it, then send me an email and I will see what I can do.

FICTION

Back in 2003 myself and a friend by the name of Daniel Kingery put together a collection of short stories by writers living in Berlin called Exiles. Exiles was a lot of work, especially the series of parties we ran at the Mudd Club in the summer of 2004, but a lot of fun as well. I still have some copies kicking around the flat, so if anyone is interested then drop me a line.

Nostalgija was my contribution to the book. Unfortunately the Exiles website is dead, but the story is now hosted on the Greatwriting.co.uk website.

Also to be found there is another story I wrote, called Letters to Beth.
